A “STRONGLY religious” church-goer who committed dozens of sexual assaults against a child – including multiple rapes - has been jailed for 15 years. Bully Nigel Smith repeatedly molested and raped his victim over several years, starting when the child was around five.

Described by probation officers as a “control freak”, the now 63-year-old, a former member of Romsey Christian Centre, would often subdue his victim through violence.
The court was even told how Smith would sit his victim on his lap during church services for his own sexual gratification.
However, Smith, of Bitterne Road East, refused to accept his wrongdoings.
Instead, he insisted he had not meant to harm the child – who the court heard was now suffering from suicidal thoughts.
He denied all charges against him, but was found guilty during a six day trial at Southampton Crown Court.
Sentencing him, Judge Nicholas Rowland, said Smith had shown a lack of remorse.
He said: “What is apparent to me is the impact this has had on your victim.
“You’ve no appreciation for what you did nor any remorse.”
Judge Rowland also condemned Mr Smith’s use of violence, describing him as a “bully”.
Prosecuting, Rufus Taylor told the court that the first incident had occurred when the child was between five and six-years-old.
The court heard how the assaults had caused “serious” psychological harm to Smith’s victim.
Defending, Sarah Jones said Smith had come from a violent background and accepted her client faced a lengthy prison sentence.
Judge Rowland sentenced Smith to a total of 15 years in prison.
His sentence was for four multiple counts of rape, as well as concurrent sentences for sexual assault and cruelty to a child.
Smith was also given a further concurrent sentence for attempting to pervert the course of justice.
Regarding the case, a statement from Romsey Christian Centre read: "Romsey Christian Centre adheres to a strict safeguarding policy, and our safeguarding officer ensures that all our workers, paid and voluntary working with children and vulnerable adults, are included in DBS criminal record disclosure checks.
"While Nigel Smith attended the church as a member of the congregation, he has never been in a leadership position in the church and was not a member of our staff team. However, we take our responsibility very seriously to report any concerns regarding any member of our congregation to the appropriate statutory authorities including police, children’s social care or adult services.
"As soon as we became aware of an allegation of physical abuse involving Nigel Smith, we took immediate action to inform Romsey Police Station and Nigel Smith was subsequently arrested. We also informed Nigel Smith that he would no longer be able to attend the church to ensure the safety of our other church members."

A CHILD rapist has been jailed for 13 years after being convicted of a catalogue of abuse against two young girls.

Martin Jegou, who changed his surname from Richardson after he was arrested in 2015, groomed the youngsters before subjecting them to sexual abuse. Both girls were under the age of 16 when the offences took place more than a decade ago.
The 51-year-old denied all charges against him but was found unanimously guilty by an Assize jury following a trial in the Royal Court this summer.
He was convicted of seven counts of indecent assault, two charges of procuring an act of gross indecency and a charge of rape against one girl, and one charge of indecent assault against the other victim.
As well as being jailed during a sentencing hearing this week, Jegou was placed on the Sex Offenders Register for a minimum of ten years.
In a statement, the States police said: 'The victims have shown incredible courage in reporting the abuse they suffered to the police and since the initial disclosures have shown strength and commitment in supporting the investigation to is conclusion.
'The huge emotional impact on the victims is impossible to quantify but will no doubt be long-lasting.
'We hope that the sentence handed down will help them to rebuild their lives.'
Following the sentencing, the States police are reminding abuse victims that they can seek confidential support at Dewberry House – a sexual offences referral centre where victims can get help in a less-formal setting than a police station. The centre can be contacted on 888222.
Any parents who have concerns about suspected child abuse or exploitation are being encouraged to phone the Multi-Agency Safeguarding Hub on 519000 or the States police's public protection unit on 612612.

Child rapist jailed for 13 years Dec 8, 2017

Franklin police fear there may be other victims after a youth dance teacher was arrested on rape charges involving a 14-year-old girl.

The instructor, 29-year-old Ross McCord, of Brentwood, has been indicted on four counts of statutory rape by an authority figure, four counts of aggravated statutory rape, solicitation of sexual exploitation by a minor and exploitation of a minor by electronic means.

According to Franklin police, McCord was an instructor at DC Dance Factory and has taught teen dance classes for 10 years. His decade as an instructor is part of the reason detectives are concerned there may be other victims.

In a statement released to USA TODAY NETWORK - Tennessee by an attorney for DC Dance Factory, the studio reported it "immediately took the necessary step of severing all ties" with McCord after learning from the Franklin Police Department several weeks ago about the allegations.

Parents approached police about McCord's involvement with their daughter

Franklin police began investigating McCord Oct. 23 after the girl’s parents “came forward with disturbing information regarding McCord and their daughter,” according to a news release.

The studio then met with dance families to inform them of law enforcement's investigation into McCord and that he had been fired.

"We cannot begin to express the depth of our sorrow and heartache regarding this situation," the studio said in its statement. "For 25 years, DC Dance has been a positive and uplifting force in the lives of hundreds of dance students. The DC Dance community is a strong family, and DC Dance assures our families, parents, students and alumni that it remains committed to maintaining a safe and nurturing environment for its students."

In response to a phone email inquiries made by USA TODAY NETWORK - Tennessee, attorney Keane Barger said that outside of its statement, the studio had no further comment on the "ongoing criminal matter."

McCord was being booked into the Williamson County jail under a $50,000 bond.

A spokesman for Franklin police declined to answer additional questions about the case, citing the pending charges against McCord.

Detectives ask anyone with information on possible other victims contact the Franklin Police Department.

A man who was raped and indecently assaulted by a former teacher at Canberra's St Edmund's College has spoken of the irreparable and enduring trauma he suffers, saying it haunts him every night.
Marsh taught at the college and coached football to the then-13-year-old.
In a victim impact statement tendered to the ACT Supreme Court, the man said he still struggled with the embarrassment, shame and self-blame trigged by the events.
"Your actions and thoughts robbed me of one of the basic rights of all children, to be a child," the statement read.
"The taking of my innocence for your personal pleasure can never be forgiven.

"The events of all of those years ago creep into my dreams every night … I cannot show the physical scars … but to me they are just as real, they will never heal."
The man said the memories were an unwanted part of him that he could never remove.
The court heard following the abuse, he stopped enjoying school and instead saw it as something he had to survive.
He said the memories surfaced as he walked through the corridor, went to the gym or sat at the bus stop.
The man also detailed how he self-medicated with drugs and alcohol, dropped out of school and developed post traumatic stress disorder.
He said to this day he suffers erratic sleep patterns, alcoholism and severe mood swings — behaviours that have damaged his relationships with his partner and children.
"Sometimes it is easier for me to find a place and just cry," the man's statement read.

"Without my family I doubt I would be here today, as I suspect the demons and memories I carry would have won."

Marsh, who continues to deny the crimes, said he was in disbelief by the man's statement.
He said being sentenced to prison would likely kill himself and his sick mother.
Marsh was found guilty of 11 charges over a series of incidents, including a serious assault when the boy was sleeping over at his house before a football match.
Prosecutor Jane Campbell told the court Marsh had shown a gross abuse of trust by grooming the victim slowly and gaining the trust of his mother.
"He assured [the mother] that she should have no concerns about him staying over," Ms Campbell told the court.
She described how he used a sporting injury the boy suffered as an excuse to inappropriately touch him, and how he abused him at the college during school hours.
"The victim statement spoke volumes about the psychological impact of child sex abuse," Ms Campbell said.
"That child was lost."
Defence lawyer Greg Walsh asked the judge to consider the impact a full-time jail sentence would have on Walsh's ill mother, as well as the difficulty of being sent to prison at his age.
But Ms Campbell said mercy should not be given because of his mother's circumstances.

FORT EDWARD -- A Hudson Falls man who violated probation on a child sex conviction admittedthat he violated probation, and is headed to prison for 3 years.
Lawrence "Ox" Loveday, 40, admitted that he did not disclose an email account and social media accounts when registering as a sex offender.
Loveday is on probation for a first-degree sexual abuse conviction that stemmed from an incident where he fondled a 7-year-old child in 2015. Hudson Falls Police arrested him in September 2016, after the girl disclosed the abuse.
Loveday went to trial in the case last January.
But he got a favorable plea deal during his trial, after a juror in the case was found to have had lunch with a court staff member the first two days of proceedings, after the juror failed to disclose she knew the staffer. A standard question during jury selection is whether a prospective juror knows anyone who works in the court or criminal justice systems.
He was arrested last month for violating probation, and is being held in Washington County Jail pending sentencing later this month. Washington County Judge Kelly McKeighan agreed to impose a three-year prison term, to be followed by 9 years on parole.

Podwirny agreed to a plea deal that will include a two-year state prison sentenced to be followed by 10 years on parole, court records show.
He is being held in Warren County Jail pending sentencing Jan. 31. by Warren County Judge Kelly McKeighan.
