A 6-year-old girl's testimony about being sexually abused convinced a jury to convict a 32-year-old man this week of unlawful touching of a child for lustful purposes.
Michael Anthony Gros received the maximum punishment allowed and will serve 15 years without parole. Circuit Court Judge Christopher Schmidt said the sentence was appropriate because Gros "was grooming the victim for future sexual abuse."
During the trial, the victim testified that in August of 2016 the defendant molested her. Following the child’s testimony, her mother took the stand and described the night at their home in Long Beach when her daughter first told her of the abuse at the hands of the defendant.
The jury was also able to view a video recorded interview of the child that was conducted almost immediately after the crime was reported by a forensic interviewer from the Child Advocacy Center located in Gulfport.
"After showing the video to the jury, the trained interviewer was able to provide expert testimony describing for the jury how children of that age are able to view traumatic events and later communicate those memories to adults," said Chief Assistant DA Crosby Parker, who tried the case with ADA Chris Carter.
During closing argument, Parker argued that a child, just like an adult, has every right to be believed in our courtrooms, and this child should be believed because her disclosures were so descriptive and in such graphic detail. He pointed out to the jury that an adolescent of the age of six would not know how to describe the specific details of a sexual crime in a child-like vocabulary unless they actually experienced the abuse.
After receiving the jury’s verdict, Judge Schmidt heard a written letter from the mother of the victim regarding how the defendant's actions have affected both her and her child.
The 15-year sentence will be served day for day without the eligibility of probation or parole. Upon his release, Gros will have to register as a sex offender for the remainder of his life.
"This case highlights the importance of having a strong Child Advocacy Center here on the Coast of Mississippi. We are fortunate that Canopy Children's Solutions has provided such a foundational operation lending a voice to children in the justice system. Their training and professionalism led to a child molester being held accountable for his actions and allowing a child to receive justice this week," said DA Joel Smith.

Authorities say a Little Rock doctor is being accused of sexually assaulting four boys between the ages of 14-21.
According to LRPD, allegations against James Nesmith first surfaced when a pastor at Covenant Presbyterian Church reported to the DHS Child Abuse Hotline in 2015 that he became aware of allegations of sexual abuse against a mentor within their church.
The pastor reported several teens within the congregation alleged Nesmith touched their genitals various times during activities such as hikes and even at Nesmith's home.
One teenage boy, now in his 20's came forward saying he was sexually assaulted at least 12 years ago.
Nesmith is currently employed at UAMS as an associate professor and worked at Arkansas Children's hospital until May of this year.
A spokesperson for UAMS says Nesmith has been placed on administrative leave without pay, and states that while Nesmith was employed at UAMS while the alleged incident occurred, the incident did not happen on their campus and did not involve a patient or patient care.
Police say Nesmith only faces one count of second-degree sexual assault in all four cases due to the Arkansas statute of limitations.
Arkansas Children's Hospital has released the following two statements in regards to the allegations against Nesmith.
Because the allegations against Dr. Nesmith involve events with a local church and not associated with Arkansas Children's Hospital, we do not have an active internal investigation. However, when the allegation first surfaced we did determine that no similar complaints had surfaced at Arkansas Children's before placing him on indeterminate suspension from the Active Medical Staff. Dr. Nesmith has been employed by UAMS for 22 years serving on the ACH campus.
Christopher Curtis resigned Arkansas Children’s on Saturday, October 14. There has been no internal investigation as the allegations do not involve Arkansas Children’s Hospital patients or Arkansas Children’s Hospital.

A "dangerous sexual predator" who raped a schoolgirl after persuading her to go back to his flat has been given an eight-year prison sentence.
Fortune Aragua from Stockwell in south London, approached the girl, who was wearing her uniform, as she started to walk home on 10 February.
The 25-year-old, who also goes by the name Izevbigie Sylvester, pestered her for her contact details.
Although she told him, she was only 13, he persisted and eventually persuaded her to go back to his flat.
Upon entering, he immediately locked the front door and offered the girl a drink, which she refused. Then he started kissing her.
When his landlady returned home, he hid the teenager in his bedroom where he sexually assaulted her.
Despite her protests, he carried on and raped her before releasing her.
On her return home, she told her mother about her ordeal. Her mother then went to Mr Aragua’s door and detained him until the police arrived and arrested him.
Aragua is a dangerous sexual predator who targeted and took advantage of a vulnerable young girl for his own satisfaction," said Detective Constable Gregg Nicol from Scotland Yard's Child Abuse and Sexual Offences Command.
“I would like to praise the victim for her bravery and courage in reporting this heinous crime to the police and for giving evidence at court which ensured Aragua was brought to justice."
Aragua denied raping and sexually assaulting the victim and claiming he had only helped her when she appeared unwell outside his block of flats.
But investigators found the victim’s DNA on Mr Aragua and his clothing, including inside his boxer shorts.
As well as his prison sentence, Aragua will be put on the Sex Offenders Register for life.

A man from Kirklees has been jailed for nine years over historic child sexual abuse.

Richard Prendergast, 45, of Westfield Road, Heckmondwike, was found guilty of 11 counts of non- recent sexual abuse against two young girls

The offences date back 25 years, the trial at Leeds Crown Court was told on September 28.

Prendergast was sentenced to nine years in prison. He must also will sign the sex offender register for life.

Detective Constable Paul Greatorex, of the Kirklees Safeguarding Unit, said: “Prendergast’s victims were young and innocent and were unable to defend themselves. He subjected them to terrible ordeals and then refused to admit his guilt, putting them through the ordeal of a court trial. He is now rightly serving a prison sentence for what he has done.

"I would like to take this opportunity to praise Prendergast's victims who not only had the bravery to come forward but also the confidence in the police that what they said to officers would be listened to.

"Some of his offending went back two decades but despite the passage of time we investigated his crimes and took action. I would like to make a promise to all victims of sexual offences, no matter how long the passage of time, that if you come forward and tell police what happened you will be listened to.”

The Provincial Commissioner of the Police in Mpumalanga, Lieutenant General Mondli Zuma, said he was elated over the sentencing of a child rapist on Monday, 16 October.
This came after the Secunda Regional Court sentenced a 69-year-old man to life imprisonment for the rape of a five-year-old girl in September 2011.

Aaron Baloi, who was well known in the neighbourhood, lured the victim into his room by enticing her with sweets, then pounced on and brutally raped her.

After he was done, he threatened and instructed her not to reveal the gruesome ordeal to anyone.
In the meantime her family was looking for her and when they could not find her where she had been playing with other children, including Baloi’s own grandchildren, they called for a lookout for the missing girl.
Later that evening, they found the child who looked distraught, scared and in pain.
When asked where she was, she told her parents she had been playing with other children and got injured.
She was rushed to hospital where it was revealed that she had been raped.
Due to the severity of the injuries, the child had to be transferred to Baragwanath Hospital for further medical attention.
During the trial, the court heard that the rape had traumatised the now 11-year-old victim and her family as the perpetrator had been a trusted and respectable man in the neighbourhood.
In passing sentence, the magistrate said what Baloi did was evil and is not allowed in the society we live in, therefore he is not fit to live in a free society.
“Children are the future of our country, adults’ core responsibility is to make sure that kids are safe and protected. But you took advantage of the trust the young girl had in you. Therefore people like you must be removed from the society,” said the magistrate.
