After spending eight years in prison for sexually abusing a 6-year-old in 2002, a Springfield man is now accused of sexually abusing two children in the span of a single month.
Dave Saffeels, 57, raped an 11-year-old girl three times and sexually abused a 2-year-old girl once.
Police say two of the rapes occurred in a hospital room of Cox South Hospital in August.
The incidents are described in a probable cause statement filed by police.
The 11-year-old went to the hospital to visit a woman who had just had twins, the statement said, and Saffeels was visiting, too.
The 11-year-old girl and Saffeels ended up together in a hospital room alone, the statement said.
The girl told police Saffeels came over to her when she was lying on the couch and he rubbed his hand near her groin, took off her shorts and raped her.
Saffeels left the room, the statement said, but came back a few hours later and performed oral sex on the 11-year-old.
The next morning, Saffeels again was left alone with the girl and put on a pink condom, the statement said.
Saffeels raped the girl, and flushed the condom down the toilet.
According to the statement, the girl said she didn't tell her mother or anyone else because she was scared.
Cox spokeswoman Kaitlyn McConnell said the hospital was not aware of the allegations at the time they occurred.
"We are fully cooperating with the Springfield Police Department and are taking this matter seriously," McConnell said.
A few weeks later, Saffeels was at a home with the girl while she was taking a shower, the statement said. Saffeels entered the shower and asked her to have sex with him.
When she said no, the statement said, Saffeels said he would force her to have sex him if she didn't comply. She complied.
Police arrested Saffeels on Friday, during a traffic stop and took him to police headquarters. According to the statement, Saffeels said the 11-year-old girl had seen a picture of his penis on his phone, but he hadn't given his phone to her.
The 57-year-old man described the 11-year-old as sexually provocative, often wearing short shorts and sitting with her legs spread.
According to the statement Saffeels told investigators she once suggestively ate a popsicle in front him.
Saffeels is also accused of sexually abusing a 2-year-old girl. A separate probable cause statement said Saffeel was at her home last week around noon when the toddler's mother took a nap.
When the mother woke up, the statement said, her daughter was crying and Saffeels said he needed to leave to go to school.
Shortly after Saffeels left, the mother noticed her daughter's diaper was crooked.
According to the statement, that night, when her father was trying to give her a bath, the 2-year-old was crying, covering her groin and saying "ouch" and "no."
The mother told police she knew Saffeels was a registered sex offender.
Saffeels is charged with furnishing pornographic material to a minor, three counts of statutory rape, three counts of statutory sodomy and one count of child molestation.
Online records show he is currently being held in the Greene County Jail on a $500,000 bond.
