FLORENCE – The trial of a man working the pony ride of a traveling petting zoo who has been charged with child sexual abuse has been scheduled for October.
Courthouse records indicate that the trial of Daryl Victor Raymond Jr. is on the Oct. 16 circuit court trial docket.
According to the records, any pending motions will be heard Oct. 10, and a pretrial conference will be held Oct. 13.
Lauderdale County Circuit Judge Gil Self will hear the case.
Raymond of 4848 School St., Stockholm, Maine, faces six counts of unlawful sexual abuse of a child under 12.
According to the indictments, the children were girls between the ages of 3 and 6.
The indictments were issued during the August 2016 grand jury session.
In the indictments, Raymond is accused of subjecting a child under 12 to “sexual contact.”
Police said Raymond was arrested April 30, 2016, after an investigation into allegations that he inappropriately touched the girls, who were on the pony ride where he was working.
Records indicate Florence police were notified of the allegations April 29, 2016. While the investigation was underway, a second girl came forward.
Police said Raymond was taken into custody the next day at the petting zoo, which had set up operations in the Big Lots Shopping Center on Darby Drive.
Authorities said Raymond was picked up without incident, interviewed, then arrested and charged.
Reports indicate Raymond was an employee of Jungle Safari, a traveling petting zoo which is based in Chiefland, Florida.
Florence Police officials said the owner of the petting zoo closed the operation and left the area after Raymond's arrest.
The first incident was reported to police after a girl told family members Raymond had touched her inappropriately.
Detectives said after Raymond was arrested, more reports of similar incidents began surfacing, which led to more investigations and additional charges.
According to the allegations, Raymond would have one hand on the pole that guided the pony and his other hand on the saddle horn where the girls were sitting. Police said while Raymond was walking with the pony, he would inappropriately touch the girls.
Court officials said Raymond has denied the allegations.
Raymond is being held in the Lauderdale County Detention Center on bail totaling $300,000.
Sexual abuse of a child under 12 is a Class B felony, which is punishable by 2 to 20 years in prison, if convicted.

LANCASTER COUNTY, Pa.– A former Frederick Township constable and convicted sex offender is facing additional charges after admitting to sexually abusing two young girls.
Frederick Townsend, 58, is facing indecent assault, unlawful contact with a minor, and indecent exposure among other related charges for the incident.
In April, State Police were notified by Children and Youth Services of a suspected child sexual abuse investigation involving Townsend.
After interviewing the victim, a pre-teen girl, police interviewed Townsend on June 1.
During the interview, police say Townsend admitted to touching the victim “down there,” and was able to recount sexual incidents with the girl.
Townsend told police he was “curious” and admitted that the abuse of the victim had actually started with her older sister before moving to her.
Townsend, who was sentenced in 2014 to 1 to 2 years in prison, plus 5 years of probation, for abusing a girl at his wife’s daycare in New Providence, will now face additional charges.

A 50-YEAR-OLD man from Oldbury-on-Severn has been locked up today after being convicted of sexually assaulting a nine-year-old girl.
Paul Bennett had admitted playfully ticking the girl in Stonehouse back in April, but denied there was anything sexual about his contact with her.
But today, a jury at Gloucester Crown Court found him guilty today of molesting the girl on April 19, and he was remanded in custody to await sentence on Friday afternoon.
He had also denied an earlier assault on the same girl sometime last year in similar circumstances. The jury cleared him of that allegation.
Bennett's offence happened when he was staying at a house in Stonehouse where the little girl was also spending the night.
She told a woman relative the next morning what had happened. Her mother was then informed and called the police.
Bennett claimed that he had arrived at the house at about midnight, saw that the girl was watching TV and playing on her tablet in the living room and went to speak to her.
He said he gave her a kiss and tickled her playfully on the chest, stomach, legs and feet but did not touch her sexually.
When he was told the next day of the allegation she had made he was 'sick with shock,' he said.
Recorder Lickey told the advocates he had not yet decided whether the offence fell into a one-to-four year sentencing category or the more serious three-to-seven year category. Either way, he said, an immediate jail term was the most likely outcome.
An NSPCC spokesman for South West England said: “It is clear that Bennett preyed on his victim’s tender age and vulnerability to sexually assault her.
“The young girl in this case showed tremendous courage in speaking out about what happened and her bravery has helped bring her attacker to justice.
“Sexual abuse can ruins childhoods and have a lasting impact into adulthood. It is vital that children have somewhere to turn if they are worried.”
Any adult concerned about the welfare of a child can call the NSPCC Helpline on 0808 800 5000, while children can call Childline on 0800 1111.
A 48-year-old central Arkansas man is accused of raping a 5-year-old girl, police said.
William Ray Fausett admitted to raping and sexually assaulting the girl several times over the past year, police wrote in the arrest report.
Fausett also told officers he showed the 5-year-old pornographic material prior to the abuse, police said.
He was arrested on charges of rape, second-degree sexual assault and sexually grooming a child.
A man went on trial accused of raping a girl and trying to rent her to friends for sex.
Glyn Thomas, of Bromsgrove Road, Greasby, Wirral , is alleged to have deliberately inflicted pain on the girl.
He is also accused of molesting a second girl by touching her breasts under the pretence he was checking for cancer.
The 68-year-old faces 27 charges relating to the two victims, who are now adult women, at Liverpool Crown Court.
He denies 11 counts of rape, six counts of indecent assault, five counts of sexual assault and two counts of causing a female to engage in sexual activity in relation to the first woman.
Thomas denies two counts of indecent assault and one count of sexual assault in relation to the second woman.
Prosecutors allege the pair were abused by Thomas over a number of years, but neither knew of the abuse of the other.
David Potter, prosecuting, told the jury: “The defendant for his part denies each and every allegation made.
“His case is that these allegations have been completely fabricated out of spite towards him. It is for you to determine where the truth lies.”
Mr Potter said the first woman brought the abuse to an end because Thomas "was trying to pass her onto his friends to abuse sexually".
She approached police in November 2015 and said Thomas began to abuse her when she was a prepubescent child.
The woman said she was “petrified” of Thomas and manipulated into performing sex acts and letting him rape her.
She said she did not tell anyone because Thomas repeatedly told her no one would believe her.
Mr Potter said when she finally said ‘no’, the woman described how she was “battered” by the defendant.
He said: “He punched her to the back of the head and she went to the floor. She soon gave up resisting.”
The woman said he made her watch porn DVDs, adding: “If I didn’t watch them, he’d tilt my head to make me watch them.”
Mr Potter said: “Another aspect of the defendant’s perversity was the use of objects to inflict deliberate pain on the complainant.”
The woman told police Thomas tried to make money out of renting her to his friends for sex.
She said: “He started mentioning that he wanted to rent me out to his friends and I thought, ‘no I can’t do that’.”

LANCASTER — A 61-year-old Lancaster man admitted to raping two young girls at his Lancaster Township home, telling police he has an “ongoing attraction to children who are in the early stages of puberty,” according to a criminal complaint.
Donald A. Moyer, of the 900 block of East Orange Street, is charged with two counts each of rape of a child, involuntary deviate sexual intercourse with a child, unlawful contact with a minor, indecent assault and corruption of minors, according to the criminal complaint.
Manheim Township police learned of the abuse when one of the girls told a teacher at school, according to the arrest affidavit. The abuse began in 2012 and lasted until 2016, the criminal complaint says.
Both victims were interviewed by the Lancaster County Children’s Alliance in February, when they both provided details of the sexual abuse. A third young girl said she witnessed Moyer sexually assaulting the other girls.

A beast who raped a teenage babysitter and indecently assaulted a woman the same age as him has been jailed.
Ian Cowan, 65, from Fife pled guilty at the High Court in Livingston to three serious sexual offences.
The widower admitted raping the babysitter in the bathroom of his then home in Linlithgow, West Lothian, on October 2 1992.
He also admitted two charges of indecently assaulting the older woman over a six-year period nearly 25 years ago.
The father-of-two had previously served nine years in prison for attempting to rape two young girls in his care.
Judge Lord Burns sentenced him to six years and three months in prison for the latest crimes.
The Crown accepted not guilty pleas to a further seven historic charges, alleging rape, child sexual abuse, assaults and threatening behaviour with a shotgun.
Passing sentence, Lord Burns said of the older victim: “She continues to suffer from the effects… to this day.
Cowan showed no emotion as he was led away to the cells but one of his victims, who was in court to see him being sentenced, quietly wept and was comforted by her family.

A Nicholas County man was sentenced  to 10 years in federal prison for a sex crime involving a minor, according to United States Attorney Carol Casto.
John Marshall Underwood, Jr., 44, of Gilboa, previously pleaded guilty to attempted enticement of a minor to engage in sexual activity. After completing his prison sentence, Underwood will be on federal supervised release for 15 years, and he will also be required to register as a sex offender.
Underwood admitted that from December 14, 2016, through February 1, 2017, he used a cell phone to communicate with a woman he believed to be a prostitute who had custody of two minor nieces. The woman Underwood thought was a prostitute was actually an undercover law enforcement officer. Underwood also admitted that he communicated with the woman about engaging in commercial sexual activity with one of the nieces.
On at least two occasions, Underwood communicated with an individual he believed to be the niece and attempted to entice her to engage in commercial sexual activity. The individual Underwood thought was the niece was also an undercover law enforcement officer.
Underwood admitted that on February 1, 2017, he arranged a meeting with the individuals, who were actually undercover officers, and was arrested after he arrived at the meeting location. Law enforcement recorded all the calls between Underwood and the undercover officers.
The investigation was conducted by the Charleston Police Department, West Virginia State Police, and Homeland Security Investigations. Assistant United States Attorney Jennifer Rada Herrald is in charge of the prosecution. United States District Judge John T. Copenhaver, Jr., imposed the sentence.
This case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative of the Department of Justice to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse. Led by the United States Attorney’s Offices and the Criminal Division’s Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section, Project Safe Childhood marshals federal, state, and local resources to locate, apprehend, and prosecute those who sexually exploit children, and to identify and rescue victims. 52-year-old Ronald Pyle was found guilty on Tuesday of one count each of Rape of a victim under 13 and Gross Sexual Imposition. Summit County Prosecutor Sherri Bevan Walsh added Pyle will not have the chance to be paroled.
