COLDWATER — Tony Zongker, 51, will serve a minimum 18 to 40 years in prison after he pleaded “no contest” to two charges of first-degree criminal sexual contest in Branch County Circuit Court on July 10.
This (case) is absolutely horrific,” said Branch County Circuit Court Judge Bill O’Grady.
“I understand, and I agree,” Zongker replied.
Judge O’Grady said he did not want to take away from “the most insightful and articulate statement from a victim in my 20-plus years in criminal law.”
The now-adult woman was too emotional to read it, so Branch County Victim’s Advocate Denise Mack read the written comments to the court.
At age 11, the young neighbor was brought into the Zongker family as a friend and became close to their children and the wife. Zongker “made me feel uncomfortable and said inappropriate things to young girls.”
When the victim looked to his wife for support, the wife made all appear normal. “I was groomed for four years. He took away my innocence in seconds,” the woman wrote.
When he entered his plea, Zongker claimed, “The other party offered. I did not ask.” Judge O’Grady told him that sex with an underage person is always illegal.
“It is not voluntary for a child to offer up sex, in this world, on this globe, even in Sherwood,” the judge said. The woman wrote that she did not come forward before because she wanted to protect the family for the children whom she cared about and whom she baby sat. She detailed how the events affected her life.
“I walked away from the house that night and felt like all the showers in the world would never wash his touch away,” she wrote.
The sexual abuse made it impossible for her to live a normal life, driving her to alcohol and drugs and allowing other men to abuse her. She said she could not have a normal relationship. “The one thing I wish for the most is that this man will never be able to change anyone else’s life in the way he has changed mine,” she concluded.
“I have my differences from what was written,” Zongker said. “But I am here for sentencing and not a trial.”
Zongker did not face the 25-year minimum mandatory or consecutive sentences. He will be 69 before he is first eligible for parole consideration.
Zongker was also sentenced to 15 years to 40 years in prison for his involvement with a boy who was age 4 to 8 in the years between 2010 and 2014, when sexual contact was made.
Zongker’s wife, Joy Elizabeth Deeren, 40, is charged with two counts of second-degree CSC for molesting a then-13-year old in her Sherwood home in 2008. Deeren claimed she was coerced to participate. Her trial is set for Nov. 9, and she remains free on a $50,000 bond.
A hearing is set for Sept. 28 in Branch County Probate Court to terminate her parental rights.
Zongker has already waived his rights to their children.

A man dubbed by police as ‘a predator’ who committed a string of serious sexual offences against two young boys has been jailed for seven years.

David Potts (59) targeted the youngsters, who cannot be named for legal reasons, at various addresses in Fife between May 2005 and October 2007.

The High Court in Edinburgh heard how Potts sexually assaulted his first victim when he was just aged just eight-years-old at an address in Burntisland.

Potts, who has previous convictions for assault and dishonesty, continued to abuse the boy for more than two years

The court also heard how Potts targeted another seven-year-old boy at a house in Kirkcaldy. He started abusing the boy in September 2006 and the assaults stopped in October 2007

The story emerged following a week-long trial at the high court in July 2017. Sentence had been deferred for the court to obtain reports on Potts’ character. Judge Nigel Morrison QC also ordered Potts to be supervised for two years following release from prison. He added: “These are serious offences.”

Speaking after the sentence, Detective Constable Ross French of Fife’s Public Protection Unit said: “One of the victims very bravely reported the abuse to a person he trusted in March 2016, which led to police being contacted and we began a thorough investigation.

Potts is a predator who has refused to admit his guilt and shown no remorse for his crimes. “I want to commend the victims for their courage throughout the investigation and trial. “The men finally have justice and I hope that this helps them to move forward.”

Canyon County Prosecutor Bryan Taylor announced that Quentin Nava, age 39, of Nampa, was sentenced by the Honorable George A. Southworth for the felony crimes of Lewd Conduct with a Child Under 16 and Sexual Abuse of a Minor Under 16.
Judge Southworth sentenced Nava to a total unified sentence of 40 years in prison, with 18 years fixed, followed by 22 years indeterminate.
During sentencing, Judge Southworth stated, “because of the nature of this case, I’m ordering that 18 years be fixed so the defendant will be in his late 50s before he is entitled to parole.”
Nava was arrested on a felony warrant in November 2016 after an investigation by the Nampa Police Department revealed he inappropriately touched two pre-teen girls while he was staying as a house guest at a residence in Nampa.
According to police, Nava, who is a registered sex offender, inappropriately touched the two young girls while they were sleeping.
“The defendant in this case is a registered sex offender who didn’t think twice about preying on young girls again,” said Prosecutor Bryan Taylor. “It highlights importance of having sex offender registries like the one in Canyon County that allow people to check on individuals by name or location. These types of tools are out there for the protection of society, and I encourage everyone to use them and use them often.”
Nava was found guilty of both charges following a jury trial in May.
Judge Southworth also ordered Nava to have no contact with the victims or any minor females for the duration of the sentence. Nava was also ordered to pay a $10,000 in civil penalties along with court costs.

A man accused of showing porn to and sexually abusing two young girls remains in jail.
Jeremy John Wohlers, 34, of John Deere Court in Richlands was arrested by the Onslow County Sheriff’s Office on two charges of felony statutory sex offense by an adult.
Wohlers is accused of removing the pants and undergarments of two girls and inappropriately touching them between Jan. 1, 2016 to Sept. 13, according to warrants.
A report came in to the sheriff’s office on Aug. 22 about an underage child being shown pornography, said Maj. Chris Thomas.
The Special Victim’s Unit began an investigation and interviewed the girls, both under the age of 13, before charging Wohlers with two charges of felony child abuse sexual act and two charges of felony indecent liberties with a child on Sept. 13, Thomas said.
In many cases, including this one, additional information comes to light that results in more charges, Thomas said.
Through a continued investigation, the additional two charges of felony statutory sex offense by an adult were added to Wohlers’ case, Thomas said.
Warrants state the most recent charges were added on Sept. 14, but Wohlers’ first appearance in court for these charges wasn’t until Monday, according to court records.
The two girls and Wohler knew each other prior to the incident, Thomas said. While the investigation was ongoing, Thomas said steps were taken to make sure the girls were safe.
“Just because we get a report of a particular crime does not mean that crime occurred,” Thomas said, explaining why the three-week investigation was necessary.
Wohlers total bond is set at $350,000 and Thomas said he has remained incarcerated since his arrest on Sept. 13. He was still in jail as of late Tuesday, according to VineLink, and has been assigned Samuel Popkin as his attorney, according to court documents.
His next court dates for these offenses are scheduled for Oct. 5 and Oct. 9, according to N.C. Courts.

A former teacher has been jailed for four years after sexually assaulting a girl under the age of 13 four separate times.
Edward Ryan, 67, of Venmore Drive, Dunmow, was found guilty on four counts of sexual assault.
He was sentenced to four years for each count, to run concurrently, at Chelmsford Crown Court on Monday.
Ryan will also be subject to a five year sexual harm prevention order and put on the sex offenders list for life.
Investigating officer Dc Pat Snape said: “This man groomed a child and abused his position of trust and his sentence will hopefully give the victim some sort of justice for the horrific offences they suffered.”
The offences took place in private lessons whilst Ryan was working as a teacher at a Harlow primary school. The paedophile is also a former governor from Helena Romanes School, Great Dunmow.
Simon Knight, headteacher at Helena Romanes School, said: "Ryan resigned as Chair of Governors as soon as the allegations against him came to light in October 2015, severing all links with our school from that time.
"We would like to reiterate that none of the charges against him related to his work as a governor at our school.
"We take the safety and wellbeing of our pupils extremely seriously and have robust safeguarding procedures in place. Governors never have unsupervised contact with pupils.”
An NSPCC spokesperson for the East of England said: “As a teacher Ryan should have been protecting children. Instead, he exploited his position of trust to sickeningly abuse a young girl in his care.
“He cruelly made his victim relive his depraved crimes in court rather than admit his guilt and it is her tremendous courage that has helped put him behind bars."

COVINGTON, La. — A Slidell man is facing mandatory life in prison after a jury found him guilty of raping a 6-year-old girl and taking explicit photos of her.
According to 22nd Judicial District Attorney Warren Montgomery,  a St. Tammany Parish jury found Jack Conklin, 61, of Slidell, guilty Friday (Sept. 15) of aggravated rape, sexual battery of a victim under 13, and production of pornography involving juveniles.
Conklin faces mandatory life in prison when he is sentenced Nov. 2 by District Judge August Hand.
The victim was 6 years old when Conklin raped her and took explicit photos of her between December 2012 and February 2013.
Conklin was an associate of the girl’s father, who occasionally left her in his care.
The crime came to light when a friend of the family overheard the victim telling another child that Conklin wanted to marry her and had kissed her like she was a woman.
The St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office investigated after being contacted by the girl’s father, but the child did not initially disclose any abuse.
Later, the Sheriff’s Office seized cameras, computers, and other electronic equipment from Conklin’s home after receiving a report that Conklin was acting suspiciously and taking photos outside a neighbor’s house in Slidell.
During questioning, Conklin admitted having marijuana, which led officers to get a search warrant. The officers found a bag of panties belonging to a little girl, a bag of human hair, and dozens of Chuck E Cheese’s trading cards with children’s faces on them.
They also found binoculars and multiple computers and cameras, which were examined by the agency’s crime lab. Technicians were able to recover more than 5,000 pornographic or erotic images of children and 2,000 such images of the victim, including some photos and a video of Conklin performing sexual acts on the child.
In subsequent interviews, the victim disclosed that Conklin had done inappropriate things to her.

Douglas Bee, 73, was arrested by the Santaquin Police Department on suspicion of aggravated sexual abuse of children.
Bee, who resides in Santaquin, reportedly abused three girls who were between the ages of 7 and 10 at the time of the abuse.
According to the police report, Bee admitted to inappropriate touching of two of the victims. When asked about the third victim, Bee reportedly told police that he didn’t remember touching her inappropriately, but that it was “probable.”
The police also have audio of Bee admitting guilt in a recorded phone conversation with one of the victim’s parents, according to the report.
Bee has no previous criminal history, according to the report.
Bee was booked at Utah County Jail on suspicion of six counts of first-degree felony aggravated sexual abuse of a child.
FARMINGTON — A Blanco man convicted of 21 felony charges, including 20 counts of child sexual abuse, has been sentenced to more than 342 years in prison.
Julian Selph, 44, was sentenced to 342 years and 90 days in prison during a hearing Tuesday afternoon in Aztec district court, according to San Juan County Chief Deputy District Attorney Dustin O'Brien.
The charges Selph was convicted of include 12 counts of criminal sexual contact of a minor in the first degree (child younger than 13), seven counts of criminal sexual contact of a minor in the second degree (person in position of authority) and one count of criminal sexual contact of a minor in the second degree (child younger than 13), according to the amended criminal complaint.
Selph was also convicted of a misdemeanor count of driving while under the influence of liquor and/or drugs in a separate case.
He was convicted by a jury following a two-day trial on Aug. 22-23, according to court records.
O'Brien said District Judge John Dean Jr. did the right thing by sentencing Selph to more than 342 years in prison.
"That sentence will send a message to people that commit this type of crime," O'Brien said. "It's unacceptable in this community."
A young female relative had accused Selph of committing multiple acts of sexual abuse against her since she was 6 years old, according to the arrest warrant affidavit. She was 13 years old when she reported the abuse.
The victim told a caseworker at the San Juan Regional Medical Center about being sexually abused on April 24, 2015, while she was being treated for injuries for jumping out of a moving vehicle Selph was driving, according to court documents.
While riding in a vehicle along U.S. Highway 64, the victim jumped from the vehicle because she felt threatened by Selph.
During an interview on April 29, 2015, the victim told authorities that Selph committed acts of sexual abuse against her, including groping her vagina and breasts, and forcing her to perform oral sex, according to court documents.
Selph was also accused of sexually penetrating the victim while they were staying at a relative’s residence.
Det. John Noyce of the San Juan County Sheriff's Office and the victim spoke during the sentencing hearing, O'Brien said.
Selph's public defender Ruth Wheeler requested that Dean sentence her client to 18 years and that the sentences to run concurrently, according to O'Brien.
Brian Decker of the San Juan County District Attorney's Office requested Selph be sentenced to 108 years in prison.
It was Noyce who requested that Selph receive the maximum prison sentence for each conviction, according to O'Brien.
