Serial paedo priest raped girl on the altar

A DEPRAVED father helped notorious paedophile Gerald Ridsdale rape his young daughter, a court has heard.

Shocking details of Ridsdale's vile offending have been aired at the County Court this morning where the sex monster pleaded guilty to more than 20 new charges.

The court heard one girl, who was abused by Ridsdale over more than two years in the 1970s, was personally delivered to the priest by her father.

On one occasion she was woken in the middle of the night and driven to a church where Ridsdale was waiting.

There, her dad stripped her, and Ridsdale abused her on the altar of the Ballarat church.

THE horrific ordeal of a young girl whose father left her on a church altar to be raped by notorious paedophile Gerald Ridsdale has moved a courtroom to tears.
On another occasion, the priest raped the then eight year old, after her dad again woke her and drove her to the church.
Weeping spectators stood and left the hearing as details of the shocking crimes were outlined in the County Court.

The Judge was also moved to tears. The victim was present to see her abuser in person.
“Jesus died for our sins so we can be forgiven, and if I confess to this sin I might be forgiven as well,” Ridsdale told her.
At the County Court this morning Ridsdale, 83, pleaded guilty to 23 sex crimes against children during the 1960s, 70s and 80s.
The offences, against 11 boys and a girl, included rape, buggery, indecent assault and sexual penetration of a child.
The court heard the frail Ridsdale, who shuffled into court supported by a walking frame, this morning had a fall and fainted before court.
Prison authorities were concerned about today’s hearing, but Ridsdale requested it not be adjourned.
They bring his official victim count to more than 60, but he has admitted the real number is in the hundreds.
Ridsdale admits losing count of the number of children he abused during a three-decade career of evil.
But he first abused while studying to be a priest.
From then on, wherever he went, kids were in danger.
He went on to molest so many children, he can no longer remember them all, he told the child abuse royal commission.
Ridsdale said while he knew what he was doing was criminal, he didn’t know he was hurting children.
He said from a young age he was unable to control his sexual urges and hoped he would get “sexual instruction” while training to be a priest.
It was at the seminary he first learned he had an attraction to boys.
He revealed he had a problem with masturbation while studying there and was told to stop it or leave, but said he never learned to control himself.
“My desire to be a priest was so strong ... that I just wouldn’t have wanted to leave the seminary, I would have wanted to stay on regardless and push on,” he said.
Ridsdale said during decades of abuse his greatest fear was losing his job.
It meant he never confided the abuse to anyone, even when confessing his sins to fellow priests.
Giving evidence to the child abuse royal commission Ridsdale admitted there was no stopping him.
At one school, in Mortlake in Western Victoria, he is believed to have abused a large number of male students.
Talking to church investigators in 1994, Ridsdale said he just couldn’t help himself.
It was no secret around Mortlake eventually about me and my behaviour; there was talk all around among the children, and one lot of parents came to me,” he said.
“I got out of control again. I went haywire there. Altar boys mainly.”
Little was done by church authorities to stop Ridsdale’s offending.
He spent his career in the Ballarat diocese under disgraced bishop Ronald Mulkearns who routinely shuffled him between parishes as new allegations came to light.
Ridsdale said church officials knew about his offending as early as the 1960s, and should have reported him to the police.
Instead he was sent to Mildura for a short time and told if he offended again he’d stripped of his priesthood.
He told the royal commission he should never have been allowed to become a priest and blames the church for the suffering of his many victims.
Ridsdale abused children between the 1960s and 1980s.
In a letter to a victim in 1979, Ridsdale wrote as if they were lovers and told him some good would come from his abuse.
“I don’t know how much you know about me or how much you’ve guessed, but you’re the first person I’ve ever wanted to open up to. You’re the first kid I have been honest with and warned off (a bit late unfortunately, but I suppose all experiences bring some good out in us),” he wrote.
At one point the paedophile bragged to bishop Mulkearns of a close relationship with a young girl he met while in White Cliffs, NSW.
But instead of acting on the revelation, Mulkearns warned Ridsdale he wasn’t to do anything that “might rebound on us later”.
In 1988 Ridsdale asked Mulkearns if he could step down from parish work “so that I may be removed from the kind of work that has proved to be a temptation and a difficulty for me”.
Mulkearns replied it would be an inappropriate step, adding: “I have every hope that nothing more will eventuate, but we have to do our part to ensure that it does not.”
Today Ridsdale will face court after pleading guilty to a string of new offences in relation to 11 children, 10 boys and a girl.
The offences occurred in Ballarat, Quantong, Mortlake, Ocean Grove, Edenhope, Apsley and Riverside.
His victims will have their chance to face their attacker, and tell the court how the abuse at his hands affected their lives.
Yesterday the child abuse royal commission made 85 recommendations including forcing priests to disclose to authorities confessions of child sexual abuse.
It is a proposal backed by Ridsdale who has previously called for the church to change the way it dealt with confession in light of the damage he had done.
Ridsdale has been in prison since 1994. It is unlikely he will ever be released.
