Tears filled a Regional Justice Center courtroom Thursday morning as some very brave parents stood up to testify against Jose Azucena.
These parents relived the vile memories of their children being molested by Azucena, a man who once had their trust.
The 64-year-old appeared in court with his translator. He was convicted back in the spring of 40 charges including child abuse and sexual assault with a minor. He was sentenced to 85 years to life in prison.
These charges stem from multiple attacks of at least five children in the Las Vegas valley. During Thursday's hearing, the state brought up those attacks, stating Azucena lured the children with candy, sexually assaulting them, and then threatening to kill their parents if they said anything.
Parents of the victims tried to hold back tears in court as they confronted a man they thought was their friend. One mother we exclusively spoke with back in November says Azucena stole her children's innocence.
"He ruined my family and stole away my children's innocence. It's something that you never think would happen to you but it did happen. We trusted him too much because we thought he was part of the family," said Amanda Moiza.
In court, Azucena was not remorse, rather he said that everything associated with the trial was fake.
This is not Azucena's first time behind bars. According to the state, he's already served 18 years for manslaughter, has committed arson, and most recently has charges against him for attacking two inmates while at the Clark County Detention Center. He's also been deported twice.
The judge said if Azucena ever gets out of jail, he will have to register as a sex offender and be supervised.
