The picture shows two stick people — one with long blond hair, a sad face, surrounded by tear drops; the other is a figure scrawled all in black.
This is the victim impact statement presented in a Hamilton courtroom Monday by a young girl, who at seven-years-old was repeatedly sexually abused by her mother's boyfriend and others. He's accused of dressing her in lingerie, carrying her to the basement in the middle of the night in their Hamilton home, where she was repeatedly sexually assaulted, with that abuse recorded and used to advertise for more participants on Craigslist.
The drawing "serves to emphasize the loss of innocence of a seven-year-old girl," Ontario Court Justice Marjoh Agro said at the sentencing hearing for Rui DaSilva.
The photo is sealed and cannot be published.
The 38-year-old Waterloo man admitted to responding to one of those Craigslists advertisements and twice visiting the girl's home in the middle of the night in 2016. DaSilva was sentenced to an additional six years and four months in prison, after credit for a year and eight months in pretrial custody.
The prosecution had asked for eight to 10 years; the defence five.
DaSilva was also sentenced a number of conditions, including being on the sex offender registry for life, not being near children under 16 for 15 years after release and limiting his access to the internet.
In a pre-sentence report referenced in court, DaSilva admits to have a sex addiction, but denies being sexually attracted to children, claiming to have been "caught up in" an experience that went further than he expected.
But Agro noted the communication online and the assaults happened over several months and it was clear he was seeking an incest scenario. When police searched his home they found 82 unrelated child pornography images, including three videos.
DaSilva's "prospect for rehabilitation is uncertain ... his likelihood of reoffending unknown," Agro said.
DaSilva pleaded guilty in May to two counts of sexual interference and two counts of making child pornography, but the sentencing was delayed after the previous judge became sick and died.
The girl's aunt, who has come to every court date to advocate for her niece, once again wept as she heard the anguishing details of the case.
She was supported by members of the Toronto Chapter of Guardians of the Children, a biker group dedicated to fighting child abuse.
Outside court the group's Sgt.-at-arms, who called herself Little Dean, said the sentence wasn't enough.
She pointed to the logo on the back of their motorcycle jackets which has scales of justice that are not balanced, saying the justice system is flawed and there needs to be a greater focus on breaking the cycle of abuse.
She said it was important they are there to show victims and their families that they are not alone.
President Rayven White (who goes by Rayven Justice) said the group hopes to be a voice for victims.
"Tell your story, tell it again, tell it again, tell it again ... there are good people out there someone will listen," she said, encouraging others to come forward.
This case is part of Project Links, a six-month police investigation that began after the girl told her biological father what happened. He reported the abuse to the Catholic Children's Aid Society, who called police.
A 49-year-old woman, Sonya Lucas, also pleaded guilty in June to taking part in the abuse when she travelled with DaSilva to Hamilton April 27, 2016. She's scheduled to return to court for a sentencing hearing Sept. 7.
The girl's mother, who can't be named to protect the victim's identity, was charged with failing to provide the necessities of life, but had her charge stayed.
The boyfriend, a 34-year-old Hamilton man who also cannot be named, faces 40 charges. His case remains before the courts.
John Gallagher, 50, of Hamilton previously pleaded guilty to possession of child pornography and making child pornography charges in relation to the case. He was sentenced to three years and seven months in prison.

Two men who carried out a catalogue of sex offences against a group of teens have each been jailed for 14 years.
Paul McDowall and Alistair Evison offered two 15-year-old girls and a boy, 14, a lift home after seeing them outside a pub in Louth.
They were then taken to an isolated place where both men carried out a series of sexual assaults.
One of the girls was raped by McDowall, Lincoln Crown Court heard. The men had denied the charges
Michael Cranmer-Brown, prosecuting, said the three victims had been drinking and two of them had smoked cannabis on the night of 31 October 2015.
They stopped at a bench outside the Gas Lamp near Louth Canal because one of the girls could barely stand up.
He said: "Her state of intoxication made her particularly vulnerable. On the face of it she barely knew what was going on around her."
Mr Cranmer-Brown said it was clear that McDowall and Evison were already discussing what they were going to do at the time they fetched a car to give the teenagers a lift.
He said: "This didn't arise on the spur of the moment. They were talking about having sex when they went to pick up the car."
The sexual assaults took place during the car journey and when the vehicle was parked, the court heard.
The youngsters were later dropped off in the centre of Louth where they sought help.
McDowall, 41, of Louth Road, South Somercotes, was found guilty of one charge of rape, two charges of sexual assault and a further charge of engaging in sexual activity with a child. He was cleared of one charge of assault by penetration.
Evison, 43, whose address was given as c/o Stanley Close, Louth, was found guilty of three charges of assault by penetration, three charges of sexual assault and a further charge of causing a person to engage in sexual activity without their consent. He was cleared of a further charge of assault by penetration.

ROME, N.Y. -- A Rome man was arrested Monday for raping a child under the age of 13, according to the Oneida County Sheriff's Office.
Jamez Williams, 21, was arrested by Oneida sheriff's Investigator Melissa Bolton, who is assigned to the Child Advocacy Center. Williams was charged with one count of first-degree rape, a felony, for engaging in sexual intercourse with a female child less than 13 years old.
The crime occurred in the village of Camden in the spring of 2017.
Williams was arraigned in New York Mills Village Court and taken to the Oneida County Correctional Facility in lieu of $50,000 bail.
A stay away order of protection was issued by the court on behalf of the victim.  The victim has been offered services through the Child Advocacy Center.

KEARNEY — It took a judge six minutes to convict a former Kearney man of sexually assaulting a girl 15 to 20 times during a 2½ month period in summer 2016.
Mark Sinachack, 33, was convicted of felony first-degree sexual assault of a child at least 12, but younger than 16, between July 1, 2016, and Sept. 1, 2016. The charge involves sexual penetration.
The victim first met Sinachack in mid-June 2016, and he told her his name was Noah. The two saw each other off and on, sharing contact information with each other, texting and becoming friends.
Kearney Police Department Investigator Dan Warrington said Sinachack was grooming the girl.
Sinachack, the victim said, claimed to be 19 years old, and she told him she was in foster care and didn’t have many friends.
In early July, Sinachack asked the victim if they could hang out, and he went to her Kearney apartment where the two eventually had sex. Sinachack and the girl continued to have sex at the apartment and at Sinachack’s storage shed in Kearney.
Multiple times, the victim testified, Sinachack told the girl not to tell anyone about their relationship. The victim said it wasn’t until someone at a gas station called Sinachack by his first name that she looked at identification in his wallet and learned his real name and age.

NORMAN — Evidence started in the second jury trial of Daniel Ryan Chadwell, 33. Both parties asked the jury to pay close attention during the trial, but for different reasons.
“At the end of the trial, you (the jury) will be convinced that Chadwell is guilty of taking advantage of these kids, and evidence will show that he had ample time to do whatever he wanted with them,” Cleveland County Assistant District Attorney Christy Miller said.
Chadwell’s attorney, Dustin Phillips, said the evidence would show inconsistencies in the victims’ testimony. Chadwell is accused of sexually abusing three children, including his former stepdaughter and stepson.
“Focus on the way the children testify,” Phillips said to the jury. “Look and see whether this is a child who was abused or a child that was told what to say.”
Two witnesses testified Tuesday, including the primary victim, Chadwell’s former stepdaughter.
The girl testified that the relationship between her and Chadwell started cordial, but it took a turn when she was about 6 years old.
“It became more sexual than a father and daughter relationship should,” she said. “I thought it was just a game.”
The girl said since the abuse, she has been heavily involved in counseling at Bethesda Inc. and an equine therapy center.
“It has helped me forget and cope with what happened,” she said.
Based on testimony from Chadwell’s ex-wife and the girl’s mother, Kerry Turner (Chadwell), Chadwell practiced nudism and wanted her and the children to participate in it, as well. Turner said it soon led to her, Chadwell, the girl and her son to shower together.
“I was always apprehensive about it, but I went along with it. I didn’t see any harm in it at that time,” Turner said.
Chadwell’s first trial in 2016 ended in a mistrial. He was originally charged with 40 felony county, including 36 counts of child sexual abuse and four counts of lewd acts with a child under 16. However, the charges were amended before the beginning of this trial to reflect 40 counts of lewd acts with a child under 16.
Turner testified she married Chadwell in 2009. She said he agreed to take care of the two children while she worked and attended school, which is when most of the alleged abuse occurred.
The trial continues today in Judge Thad Balkman’s courtroom.

COLUMBIANA – A 40-year-old Alabaster man is facing up to life in prison after he was indicted recently on charges alleging he sexually abused a child younger than 12 in 2015.

A Shelby County grand jury during its August session returned a two-count indictment against Ramon Rosas Morales, who lists an address on Kent Dairy Road in Alabaster, upholding one felony count of first-degree rape and one felony count of sexual abuse of a child younger than 12.
According to the indictments, which were made public on Aug. 21, Morales did “engage in sexual intercourse” and did “subject to sexual contact” a female who was younger than 12 from May 2015 to June 2015.
Shelby County Sheriff’s Office deputies arrested Morales on Oct. 31, 2015, and charged him with felony counts of first-degree rape and sexual abuse of a child younger than 12.
First-degree rape is a Class A felony, and carries a maximum sentence of life in prison upon conviction, while sexual abuse of a child younger than 12 is a Class B felony, and carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison upon conviction.
Morales is set to appear in Shelby County Circuit Court on Oct. 3 for arraignment at 8:30 a.m.
As of Aug. 22, he remained in the Shelby County Jail on bonds totaling $90,000.
A member of the Weatherford Guardians of the Children chapter has been arrested following accusations he sexually abused a teenage girl he was entrusted to help after she faced previous abuse.
Roy Glenn Ward, 62, was arrested on two charges of sexual assault of a child and a charge of indecency with a child by exposure.
According to the probable cause affidavit, a 16-year-old girl during a forensic interview at a children’s advocacy center said Ward sexually assaulted her earlier this year when she was 15 years old and continued the abuse multiple times through June.
The two met through Ward’s affiliation with the Guardians of the Children, a motorcycle club organized to support child victims of abuse.
In addition to the girl’s interview, the girl’s mother told the Democrat that the family also turned over other evidence showing Ward abused the girl.
To avoid identifying a child who has sexual assault, the newspaper is not naming the mother.
The girl was sexually assaulted by two men in the past, according to the girl’s mother. Both have been convicted, court records show.
During the difficult time after the girl’s first outcry several years ago, the girl was introduced to Ward and other members of the Guardians of the Children, according to her mother.
Ward was called Cobra, according to the victim’s mother.
“The defendant was eventually entrusted to transport the victim to and from various appointment,” the probable cause affidavit states. “Additionally the victim was allowed to stay overnight with the defendant at his residence in Tarrant County, Texas.”
Ward used alcohol and Xanax to control her daughter and allowed two other men to sexually assault the girl, as well, according to the victim’s mother.
The girl’s mother said she also alerted to the Parker County Sheriff’s Office to an outcry by a second girl, though Ward does not appear to have been charged in that case.
“I do want this story to be known because I think if we can get this story out there maybe somebody will come forward, maybe some other victims will come forward,” the woman said.
