2 paedos jailed for using popular instant messaging app Kik

An instant messaging app popular with children was used by paedophiles to target victims in Liverpool - and parents could be unaware of it.

Kik is a mobile messaging service similar to whatsapp.
The app has more than 15 million monthly users and DOESN’T require a telephone number or your real name when you sign up.
This week two men, who both admitted using Kik, were convicted of sex offences against children at Liverpool Crown Court on the same day.
Sick Mark McKuhen used it to send and receive over 1,000 indecent images of children, videos of children being raped and naked images of himself to other perverts.
The 34-year-old, of Hargate Walk, Northwood, Kirkby, was jailed for two years.
The same day married dad-of-two Christopher Forsyth, 31, of Glamis Road, Tuebrook, was jailed for stalking a 14-year-old girl after asking her to add him on the app.

The app has attracted a barrage of criticism in the past year and has been linked to sex offences against children up and down the country.
It’s primarily designed for children, with features that allow you to join groups, send emojis, make memes, play games and listen to music.
However, it is possible to find and chat with total strangers and you can even search for public groups aimed at teenagers wanting to chat.
It has it’s own internet service and internal apps. Some of the most popular include Flirt!, which gives you a list of users in your age range, and Match & Chat, similar to dating app Tinder.

Some of these apps have been found to host adult content and have features that allow people to message and connect with strangers and use geolocation tags.
Kik’s internet service can bypass parental controls and web filters around adult content and there are no settings within the app to disable or protect against it.
In 2015 Kik was valued at a billion dollars, yet it is still less popular than Facebook and Twitter, meaning many parents are less familiar with it.
Security experts have warned parents to monitor their children’s use of Kik due to it’s added levels of anonymity.
As with all social media, parents are advised to talk to their children about staying safe online.
It’s a good idea to check their mobile privacy settings and monitor their access to social media.
