Depraved gay paedos “ruined the lives” of their young victims

Two depraved paedophiles who ran a geust house in Southport “ruined the lives” of their young victims a court heard today.

The sickening acts committed by John Aspin and his husband Bill Bryant – who has since died – were today revealed at Liverpool Crown Court.

Aspin, 66, of Knowsley Road, Southport, was jailed for 15 years while Bryant’s death meant that his victims saw him cheat justice.

One man raped by the two paedophiles at their Southport guest house says he will always wonder how his life could have been different.

Liverpool Crown Court heard today how Aspin and Bryant plied one boy with drugs and alcohol before a “sinister” threesome.

The pair then took a second child to the basement of a friend’s hotel, where they subjected him to “violent sex” against his will.

Aspin, 66, of Knowsley Road, Southport, was found guilty of nine historic sexual offences following a trial.

He was jailed for 15 years today, when a judge told him he and Bryant had “ruined the lives” of their vulnerable victims.

The second of the two men remembered feeling “a paralysing sense of fear” when he was invited as an adult to an event attended by the couple.
He told the court: “This was the first time I had accepted the fact that as a 14-year-old, I had been sexually manipulated, abused and raped.
The victim said after going to the police he repeatedly asked himself: “What person would I have become had this not happened to me?”
He added: “I believe that over the years, my addictive behaviour, alcohol-wise, my depression, my suicide attempt, have in part stemmed from my childhood trauma.
The man said their attack was his first sexual experience, affected his ability to form relationships and left him “insecure”.
He revealed he had sought counselling and added: “The events of my childhood remain vivid.
“After hiding them away and to my shame, dismissing others who had come forward as over-reacting, I have finally realised that I was a victim of child abuse. I was raped.
“Today, I look back at that boy and start crying. Thinking about what happened makes me feel like a scared 14-year-old.
“I wish things had been so different. My anger is so great, I fear it. I have become reclusive and tense. I wish this burden to be lifted.
“The most agonising thing about all of this is the ability not to know where I would be or who I would be.
“That was taken from me so long ago, but at least now I can be at ease with the person I am.”
The first victim said that over the years he had “carried around what they did to me as a burden”.
He said the rapists continued trying to control him after their attacks and had intimidated and insulted him.
The victim said: “Bill and John were very threatening, without threatening violence, due to who they knew. They were powerful people.
“I am angry with myself now as an adult because it has took me until now to report this matter.”
He told the court keeping the feelings inside “frustrated me emotionally and made me angry as a child” and he felt like he had failed his family.
The victim said: “When I look back now I think I didn’t tell anyone when I was older because I didn’t want anyone to think I was gay.
“This would have had a huge effect on my wife and my son, so again I kept things to myself.”
He suffered a panic attack when he once saw his attackers while out shopping and said that he had become “an emotional wreck”.
The victim added: “It’s only when I really think about my life that I realise that what Bill and John did to me really affected me in the way that I am and the way that I am towards other people.
“I can’t even accept a compliment from someone because I will think there is an ulterior motive, as this is what John and Bill would do and say to me.”
Speaking after the case, Detective Constable Michelle Wilson said Aspin’s victims had shown “tremendous resilience and strength”.
The officer said she hoped the jury’s verdict had “released a huge weight from their shoulders” because “time should never be a barrier to obtaining justice”.
Det Con Wilson said: “Specially trained officers and lawyers in Merseyside Police’s Unity team have been by their side throughout the investigation and court hearings.
“I hope today’s sentence gives Aspin’s victims some sense of closure and vindicates their decision to come forward.”
People can call the Unity team on 0151 777 1382, or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
