Saying she didn't think Coleman Peace would be able to control future urges to sexually assault children, a judge ordered the Randolph man to serve the rest of his life in prison without parole for raping a young girl last fall.
"I'm truly sorry. I never meant to hurt anyone," Peace told Portage County Common Pleas Judge Laurie Pittman just prior to being sentenced. "It was an impulse of my past."
"There's something very, very wrong with you," Pittman told Peace.
The victim's father agreed with her during a victim impact statement, calling his former acquaintance "most heinous" and "monstrous."
"Nothing can explain away doing something like that to a child," the man said.
Peace was arrested in September on charges he raped the 3-year-old girl inside her home in Ravenna Township. The child's father found Peace and the girl alone inside her bedroom on Sept. 17, behind a locked door.
The victim told an adult Peace had sexually assaulted her, and Peace admitted the crime during questioning by a sheriff's detective. Pittman found Peace guilty of rape and gross sexual imposition after a one-day trial in April.
Peace will appeal his conviction and sentence, attorney Mark Carfolo of the Portage County Public Defender’s Office said. He admitted his client committed a "horrific, horrible" crime, and one that "we as a society can never understand, don't want to accept and want to punish," he said, while asking Pittman to consider a lesser sentence than life without parole.
Peace's early childhood was "horrific and chaotic," Carfolo said. His mother died when he was 2 and he was abused by a chronically ill, alcoholic father until his mother's cousin, Twila Denziger, gained custody of him and became the only mother he ever knew, he said.
The abuse "magnified one-hundred times" the chance Peace would become an abuser and offender some day, Carfolo said. Denziger, meanwhile, told the judge she wanted to "see him get some help."
Assistant Portage County Prosecutor Eric Finnegan recommended the maximum sentence from the court.

Pittman reassured the victim's family that the child will heal.
"She's bright, she's strong, and with your help, she will be fine," the judge told the child's parents.
Along with the life sentence, Peace was ordered to serve five years for gross sexual imposition, to run concurrent with the life sentence. A Tier III sex offender, he would be required to register his address with his local sheriff's office every 90 days for the rest of his life if ever released.

Child rapist sentenced to life without parole Dave O'Brien, Record-Courier July 7, 2017

A man was arrested for sexual abuse eight years after charges were filed.

A girl reported she was sexually abused when she was a young child under the age of 14.
Court documents reveal it happened on Aug. 28, 2008 in Benton County.
At the beginning of 2009, the Benton County District Attorney’s Office filed three charges against Fidencio Cruz-Galan.
Those charges include two counts of sexual abuse and one count of sexual penetration using a foreign object.
A warrant was issued for Cruz-Galan’s arrest.
Now, nearly eight years later, he was arrested at the end of June in Linn County.
KATU News is not naming the victim. She issued the following statement.
“Yes, I am happy that he was finally caught and I, myself would like to know how it took him 8-years to get caught,” said the victim. “It’s a relief to know that my family and I don’t have to be scared of him just showing up one day. It’s still so unreal and I am still in shock that he was found.”
A lieutenant with the Corvallis Police Department told KATU News, this is a very long and extensive case. The department did not want to comment until officers talk to the District Attorney’s Office.
Amie Matusko, with the Benton County District Attorney’s Office, is handling the case. She was unavailable for comment.
KATU News also stopped in to talk to Robert Corl, Cruz-Galan’s defense attorney, but he refused to comment on the story.

WAUSAU, WI (WSAU-WAOW) -- A father and son had sex with an underage girl who told investigators she believed she had been drugged with a glass of wine.
57-year-old Scott Filtz of Hatley and his 20-year-old son Raymond of Stevens Point were each charged with second-degree sexual assault of an intoxicated victim and having sex with a child age 16 or older.
Prosecutors say the 17-year-old former girlfriend of Raymond's went to Scott's house in the Town of Bevent Sunday and was given a glass of wine. The girl claims not to remember anything that occurred after drinking it and was found by her mother at Raymond's home the next morning.
The teen said she did not "knowingly give Scott or Raymond permission to have sex with her." According to authorities, Scott Filtz admitted to having sex with her, saying she was "begging" both him and his son.
During brief court appearances Friday, signature bonds were set for both men. Both are set to appear in court again later this month.

FAIRFIELD — A 51-year-old Vacaville man will likely be spending the rest of his life in prison after being found guilty of eight felony child sexual assault charges.
Alejandro Zamora has been in jail since October 2015, shortly after a 15-year-old girl reported that Zamora had been continuously sexually abusing her for several years.
Authorities said the girl was first sexually assaulted by Zamora when she was eight years old. The sexual assaults became a routine part of the girl’s life and continued until she was in the tenth grade and shared her history of abuse with two friends and then her mother who called police.
When Vacaville detectives talked with the girl she had a surprise for them. She turned over a small bottle containing Zamora’s semen that she obtained during the last two times Zamora sexually assaulted her, according to authorities.
After his arrest, Zamora initially denied ever engaging in any sexual activity with the girl. But when confronted with the bottle Zamora changed his story saying the girl had just recently seduced him and compelled him to have sex with her.
Testimony during Zamora’s three-week jury trial included the girl, now 17, spending three days on the witness stand being questioned for hours at a time about the years of sexual abuse. Jurors also heard from a DNA expert who testified that the victim’s DNA was found on Zamora’s genitals by a nurse conducting an examination shortly after Zamora’s arrest.
Zamora was convicted of sexually abusing a child, committing lewd and lascivious acts on a child, multiple charges of oral copulation with a child under 10 years old and sodomy with a child under 10 years old and unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor.
Judge Wendy G. Getty ordered Zamora to return to court for sentencing on August 21.
ANDERSON — Madison Circuit Court Division 1 Judge Angela Warner Sims handed down the maximum sentence of 52 years in prison to an Anderson man convicted by a jury last month on two charges of child molestation.
Warren Pierce, 32, was found guilty of Class A felony child molestingintercourse or deviate sex with a victim less than 14, and Class C felony child molesting.
Pierce's wife, Myshia, 32, was also charged with Class C felony child molesting. She is scheduled to appear before Warner Sims for a dispositioinal hearing July 24 at 1 p.m.
In a statement read in court Monday, Pierce maintained he was innocent of any wrongdoing. He plans to appeal the conviction.
"I kind of feel like nobody cared about the truth during trial," he said. "My family's getting taken away and I didn't do anything wrong."
In arguing for the maximum sentence, Madison County Deputy Prosecutor Thomas Chandler said there were multiple victims and numerous acts of sexual abuse. Pierce was charged with just two.
In addition, Chandler said the children were under the age of 12 when the abuse began, and they've suffered emotional and psychological harm.
Pierce remained impassive as a relative of the children testified how they were affected by the abuse.
"You make me sick because of what you did to these kids," the relative said. "We have tried to help the kids cope with what has happened."
Pierce was arrested in 2016 in connection with the molestation of a then 8-year-old boy over a span of four years between 2008 and 2012.
The victim was 4 years old when the incidents began. The child said he told Myshia Pierce about the incidents but she would continue to play games on a computer while her husband touched him.
The boy revealed the molestation to authorities during a Kids Talk session where potential victims can report abuse in a safe setting.
Myshia Pierce was charged with aiding, inducing or causing an offense.
At the time the boy's allegations surfaced, Warren Pierce was awaiting trial on a 2015 molestation case involving a 7-year-old girl.
The two cases were joined for trial.
In that 2015 case, Pierce was arrested for making the girl, then 7 or 8, perform a sexual act on him. According to probable cause statements filed at the time, Pierce molested the girl in a remote area of his home while other people were reportedly in the house.

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, MD (WUSA9) - A man convicted of raping two minors is now behind bars after spending more than a decade on the run.

In 2005, Luis Arevalo was found guilty of committing multiple sex offenses on the two daughters of his live-in lover in Gaithersburg. One girl was eight. The other was six.

However, Arevalo lived a free life for years after that.

Ramon Korionoff, a spokesperson for the Montgomery County State's Attorney's Office, said Arevalo didn't even attend his own trial. Instead, he fled to his native El Salvador, before hiding in plain sight in both the Houston and DC areas.
"In recent years, he was able to get back into the country," said Korionoff.

However, authorities were alerted to Arevalo's whereabouts after his two victims spotted him on Facebook. Korionoff said Arevalo was posing in pictures with extended family in the Houston area.

After that, the two girls called authorities in Montgomery County. Officials in Rockville then contacted their counterparts in the Houston area. Around the same time, as the investigation gained steam, Arevalo turned himself into police.

On Friday, he was sent to a state penitentiary to spend the next seven years of his life behind bars.

MONTICELLO - Leon “Tiger” Fountain of Monticello has already been indicted on federal drug charges.
But he could face 25 years to life in prison if he is convicted on charges of rape and incest of a child under 13, Sullivan County Court Judge Frank LaBuda said Monday.
Fountain, 35, was brought from the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, a federal prison where he is being held without bail, to a hearing at Sullivan County Court to discuss a possible plea bargain.
In exchange for a guilty plea to the lesser crime of course of sexual conduct against a child, a class B felony, Chief Assistant District Attorney Meagan Galligan said the district attorney’s office was prepared to offer him 10 years in state prison with 10 years of parole.
Through his lawyer, Lawrence Gold, Fountain told the court he needed time to consider the offer.
State police in Liberty, along with the Sullivan County Family Violence Unit, said Fountain engaged in sexual acts with a child over an extended period of time.
Police did not release more information about the victim.
Fountain was also among 11 people from Sullivan County indicted in January on conspiracy to distribute heroin.
LaBuda said the case before his court should take priority.
“A federal drug case compared to an alleged rape of a child, I think our society is more concerned about this behavior,” LaBuda said.

A PAEDOPHILE who subjected a young girl to a “reign of terror” has been given a 17-year extended prison sentence.

For more than 30 yearsJohn Sawyer66, escaped justice for his crimes of sexual and physical abuse, York Crown Court heard.
But after his victim gave evidence against him twice, he is today starting his lengthy prison sentence. She was at primary school when he abused her.
Recorder Caroline Wigin told Sawyer: “You were violent to this child... she was subjected to humiliation at your hands, you controlled her... by imposing a reign of terror.
“I’ve heard evidence of this violence and I accept entirely the complainant’s account you would burn her hand with a cigarette, ... and kick her and tell her nobody could hear her.
“On one occasion you stabbed her fingers with scissors and explained it was an accident.
You moved from simple physical abuse of this child to sexual abuse.”
She gave him an extended prison sentence of 16 years plus an extra year’s supervision following the end of the 16 years.
She also ordered him to sign the sex offenders’ register for life and made him subject to a lifelong sexual harm prevention order which bars him from contacting any girl under the age of 16.
A York jury found Sawyer, of Vincent Way, Foxwood, guilty after a trial in May of several charges of rape and indecent assault, which he had denied.
It was his second trial. At an earlier trial at York Crown Court last September, the jury couldn’t reach verdicts on the sexual charges, but acquitted him of causing actual bodily harm to the girl when she was very young.
The defence handed in medical reports indicating that Sawyer is now in poor health and suffers from chronic shoulder pain and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
The judge told the court the abuse began with physical abuse. The judge said when the girl became “terrified” of her abuser, he raped and sexually humiliated the youngster.
When she told a friend at school about the crimes as a teenager, social services became involved.
However, Sawyer persuaded the girl to tell them she had made up the allegations.
The judge said the girl, now a woman, finally went to the police after decades of silence in 2014.
She had heard that by then children in Sawyer’s family were the same age as she had been when she was abused and she feared for their safety at his hands.
