Serial paedo sentenced for sexual abuse of 6 girls

A "persistent and manipulative paedophile" from Caterham has been jailed for 18 years for a series of horrific sexual offences against young children.

David Defontaine was jailed last Friday, June 23, after the he was found guilty of 16 counts of sexual abuse against six victims by a jury at Croydon Crown Court on May 5.
The first complaint against Defontaine, of Banstead Road, was made to police on April 19, 2015, after an 11-year-old girl told her mother he was abusing her.
The 53-year-old was subsequently charged with two counts of attempting to rape a girl aged under the age of 13 and three counts of assaulting a girl aged under the age of 13 by touching.

Defontaine, previously of Famet Gardens in Kenley, appeared at Croydon Magistrates Court on April 1, 2016.
These charges then resulted in more victims deciding to come forward and disclose to police details of sexual abuse Defontaine had committed against them.
Allegations were made by a 14-year-old girl, who Defontaine met in 1992.
One of the allegations were made by a woman whom Defontaine abused over 30 years ago - starting when she was nine years old.
He also abused a nine-year-old in 2008, as well as a 10-year-old in 2000.
Defontaine, a former bus driver, was found guilty of all 16 offences against the six victims and last Friday (June 23) he was sentenced to 18 years in prison. He will have to serve an additional eight years on licence.
Detective Constable Darren Rose, of the Met's Child Abuse Investigation Command, said: "This was a campaign of sexual abuse that lasted over thirty years.
"The jury saw through Defontaine's lies and he was described by the judge as 'a persistent and manipulative paedophile'.
"All of the victims are to congratulated for their courage in coming forward and the bravery they showed throughout this trial."
Detective Constable Steve Parker, also of the Child Abuse Investigation Command, added: "Defontaine showed no remorse for the impact his actions have had on his victims. I hope that the substantial sentence he has been given offers the victims a measure of comfort and closure."
An NSPCC spokesperson said: "Defontaine systematically took advantage of his young victims and the impact of his abhorrent actions will affect them for the rest of their lives.
"This lengthy sentence at last puts an end to Defontaine's horrific campaign of abuse.
"We hope his incredibly brave victims are receiving support to overcome their experiences and that he receives treatment so the threat he poses is minimised once he is released."
The NSPCC helpline is always available for anyone with concerns about abuse on 0808 800 5000, while children can contact Childline, 24 hours-a-day and for free on 0800 1111.
