Paedo youth football coach raped 3 juvenile girls
A former Bensalem Ramblers football coach has been accused of raping at least three female juveniles while with the organization.
Shannon "Shawn" Westmoreland, 47, now of Chester County, repeatedly raped the girls, one of whom was 4 years old, between 1999 and 2011, Bensalem Director of Public Safety Fred Harran said during a press conference Wednesday.
Westmoreland moved away from Bensalem after 2005, and was arrested at his job at the Exton Mall in Chester County on Wednesday morning, Harran said.
He added that the criminal investigation is ongoing, but police are glad to "get this guy off the street."
Bucks County District Attorney Matt Weintraub, who was at Harran's side during the conference, said there could be more victims, and asked the public to come forward if they know anything about Westmoreland's past. He asked the public to call Bensalem police at 215-633-3719.
"Let us determine how credible the information is, but please call," Weintraub said.
Police began investigating Westmoreland in October, after a now 17-year-old girl told them she had been sexually assaulted numerous times by Westmoreland beginning when she was 4 years old and ending when she was 9 or 10. The assaults took place at a home in the 1100 block of Colonial Avenue in Bensalem. Eight years earlier, another girl had reported to police that the coach assaulted her when she was 15.
She said that Westmoreland forced her into his vehicle and then forced himself on her in a funeral home parking lot on the 800 block of Bristol Pike in the same township in 2005, court records show.
Then, on June 21, township detectives met with a third female, who said she too was raped by Westmoreland, beginning in 1999 when she was 6 years old until she was 18 in 2011, according to the court documents.
Two Bensalem Ramblers officials, Jolene Malcolm and Hugh Owens, declined to comment when contacted Wednesday.
Westmoreland was arraigned Wednesday by Senior District Judge Kenneth Deatelhauser and sent to Bucks County prison in lieu of 10 percent of $300,000 bail. He faces charges of rape, statutory sexual assault, indecent assault, involuntary deviate sexual intercourse and rape of a child under 13, court documents filed with District Judge Michael Gallagher show.
